New construction in the hydrocarbon, chemical processing and power industries often use electric tracing for freeze protection and temperature maintenance requirements. This includes the process and gas analyzer systems. Whenever possible, O'Brien products are designed so they do not require temperature control to maintain the process fluid within its thermal operating range (prevent freezing, component drop-out, or boiling). When this is not possible or for the purpose of energy efficiency, temperature control will dictate the performance of the electric traced sample transport system. Electric tracing offers a “clean” and accurate medium for these applications.
(Steam and recirculating heating systems can be very cost and performance effective. Control systems for these heaters are often based on pressure control, trapping, and circuit lengths. O’Brien TRACEPAK can offer unique designs to accommodate a wide variety of these applications. Consult the factory for temperature control of these applications.)
For electrically heated bundles we provide solutions for 'thigh' temperature control such as in analytical sample transport of gases, to viscosity control as in the measurement of 'bottoms' and ambient freeze protection.
Ambient Sensing
Ambient sensing thermostats can control the tracing system to maximize energy efficiency. When the ambient temperature is above the freeze point of the process fluid it will turn off the tracing system and conserve energy.
TPKTS-A-7 - This ambient sensing thermostat is FM, UL & CSA approved for use in hazardous locations. The 120 - 277V switch has a maximum current carrying capacity of 22A.
ETS-05-L2-E This electronic thermostat may be used as a line sensing thermostat or by securing the sensing bulb to the mounting bracket it can control by the ambient temperate. It is ATEX and EAC Ex approved for use in hazardous areas. The 195 - 230V switch has a maximum current carrying capacity of 32A.
Line Sensing
Line sensing thermostats are used to maintain process temperature in TRACEPAK and STACKPAK tubing bundles. They installed in bundles containing SensorTube or a field installed with a jacket patch kit.
EX-02 Electronic line sensing thermostat is field installed with a TPKJP-1 or 2 jacket patch kit. Control range is -4°c - 163°C and is ATEX and EAC Ex approved for use in hazardous areas. The 480V maximum switch has a maximum current carrying capacity of 22A.
ETS-05-L2-E This line sensing electronic thermostat is compatible SensorTube TRACEPAK and STACKPAK tubing bundles. The two meter long PT100 sensor may also be field installed with a TPKJP-1 or 2 jacket patch kit. It is ATEX and EAC Ex approved for use in hazardous areas. The 195 - 230V switch has a maximum current carrying capacity of 32A.
Controllers
Controllers offer the most sophisticated control.
1038 Controller ensure system integrity a full set of parameters are measured, including ground fault, temperature, current and voltage. The 1038 can be set to periodically check
the tubing bundle for faults, alerting maintenance personnel of a problem which eliminates costly manual maintenance checks. A programmable dry contact alarm relay is included for local or remote alarm annunciation with a standard PT100 sensor. An available 1038SC-002 T/C Signal Converter accepts Type J and K thermocouple inputs. The 1038 is available in either a GRP or 304SS NEMA 4X/IP6X rated enclosure. (GRP = IP4 / SS = IP66) With a maximum voltage of 277V and 32A maximum current switching it is ATEX and EAC Ex approved for use in hazardous areas.
